Making Friends through Best Buddies

Article by Zoe Barbour (’22)

The Best Buddies program is one of the many clubs here at Broadneck High School. It is a club centered around connecting with others and building and serving communities. It provides a space for teens with disabilities as well as others in the student body to make new friends, participate in service projects, and just hang out and play games. Ethan Baumuak, a freshman, says he joined Best Buddies because he “wanted to help people and enjoys making new friends.”

So far this year, Best Buddies has raised money and participated in a dance night to help Gigi’s Playhouse. They also plunged at the “Cool Schools” Polar Bear Plunge to support Special Olympics. They are currently working on raising money for the Bruin Dance-A-Thon.

The Best Buddies club is part of a larger “nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities”(Best Buddies International webpage).

Hannah Guidry, a senior, is the president of Best Buddies. She, along with the other officers helps to run meetings and organize activities. She says that she joined Best Buddies because of her love for people. To her, Best Buddies means “inclusion for all and the opportunity to gain friendships.”

Best Buddies meets every Tuesday, and in addition to doing service projects, the meetings are a fun time for socialization and meeting new people. Faith Harrison, a sophmore, enjoys “hanging out with everyone and watching them grow as people.”

Many of the members of Best Buddies are also involved in the Unified Sports teams. Broadneck’s winter Unified Sport is bowling. There are 54 athletes on the team. “One thing I enjoy about bowling is getting to spend time with the other students and having fun’’, says Maile Peacock, a freshman.

Best Buddies is for everyone. It’s a great place to meet new people and make new friends. Hannah adds that “it is just such a fun club and would bring joy to anyone’s day. The atmosphere is amazing, and it is just a very fun and loveable place.”
